Carlsbad Current Argus (July 3, 2020) – Government leaders cautioned the State of New Mexico in enacting stricter regulations on methane emissions from oil and gas operations during an economic downturn and plunging oil prices amid the COVID-19 pandemic.  The State was in the midst of establishing tougher rules intended to curb air pollution and waste caused by the release of methane from the oil and gas industry when the pandemic hit in March, holding public meetings throughout New Mexico in the last year.

Carlsbad Current Argus (July 9, 2020) – A four-phase project to rebuild portions of United States Highway 285 in Eddy County is set to start Aug. 3, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation (DOT).  The first two phases of the nearly $56 million project will take place between mile markers 0 and 7 and mile markers 16 to 18 along the U.S. 285 corridor, read a DOT news release.

Santa Fe New Mexican (June 22, 2020) – The New Mexico Legislature finished its main task of mending the state’s huge fiscal shortfall Saturday, as the House of Representatives wrapped up additional work on Monday.  The modified budget plan sent to the Governor uses a combination of spending cuts, reserves and federal funding to deal with a projected $2 billion drop in state revenue for the next fiscal year.

Santa Fe New Mexican (June 16, 2020) – The New Mexico Supreme Court has denied a petition to allow the public entrance into the Legislature when the special session begins Thursday.  An attorney on behalf of several lawmakers argued in oral arguments before the state’s high court Tuesday that the constitution requires the general public be granted entrance into the Roundhouse. In a split decision, Chief Justice Judith Nakamura announced that the petition was denied without an immediate explanation.

 

Supreme Court Denies Petition To Open Special Session

Santa Fe New Mexican (June 8, 2020) – To say times are tough for energy companies in the San Juan Basin would be an understatement.

The market for natural gas is so bad right now that T. Greg Merrion (former IPANM Board President) has shut in nearly half of his family-owned company’s wells, most located in northwestern New Mexico.

But that could soon change.

If Merrion and key industry analysts are correct, there might be a silver lining in the oil crash caused by the coronavirus pandemic — it could end up helping northwestern New Mexico natural gas producers and even give a lift to state revenue in a time of crisis.

Carlsbad Current Argus (May 29, 2020) – Oil and gas in the Permian Basin could be headed for recovery as prices rebuild from April’s historic collapse driven by reduced demand brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic.  Many states recently began pulling back on travel restrictions and stay-at-home orders, which could cause fuel demands to increase and the price of oil to grow.  As of Tuesday, domestic crude was reported at $33.25 per barrel, per the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, showing a more-than-$10 increase since May started at about $19 per barrel.

IPANM (May 27, 2020) – The State of New Mexico’s 2020 Special Session will begin June 18th. IPANM will continue to advocate for New Mexico’s independent Oil & Gas producers to ensure our members can operate and help rebound an industry that is responsible for funding one out every three teachers in the state, enhances public safety, and advocates for safe production of our natural resources. Legislators will face a daunting task to get the state back on track. The 2020 oil price crash has been an unfortunate reminder of how important the oil & gas industry is to New Mexico. Now, more than ever, state legislators and New Mexico’s Governor need to rally around independent producers and support efforts to help our smaller oil businesses return to prominence in New Mexico.  When the oil flows, New Mexico grows!
